Plant Sap Analysis

What is Plant Sap Analysis?

Plant sap analysis,  also known as plant sap testing or plant tissue  analysis, is a  valuable tool for cannabis growers to monitor the  nutrient status and  overall health of their plants. It involves taking  samples of plant sap  (the liquid content found within plant cells) and  analyzing it to  assess nutrient levels and identify potential nutrient  imbalances or  deficiencies.

Plant sap analysis vs. soil testing

Plant sap analysis and soil testing are two complementary methods that  provide different types of information for cannabis growers. The choice  between them depends on your specific goals and what you want to  understand about your plants. Here's why you might choose plant sap  analysis over soil testing or in combination with it:

  1.   Real-Time Nutrient Status

  • Plant Sap Analysis: Because it reflects the plant's immediate nutrient status, you can quickly identify and address nutrient imbalances or deficiencies as they arise. This can be particularly important in hydroponic or soilless growing systems where the plant relies solely on nutrient solutions provided by the grower.
  • Soil Testing: Soil tests can be valuable for assessing the nutrient content of your growing medium before planting, but they won't alert you to nutrient issues that develop during the growing season. Soil conditions can change over time, and the plant's nutrient uptake may not align with soil nutrient levels.

         2.   Rapid Response to Correct Nutrient Issues:

Sampling Process

  • Leaf or Petiole Sampling: Typically, the youngest fully expanded leaves or petioles (leaf stems) are selected for sampling. These are considered the most accurate indicators of the plant's nutrient status.
  • Clean Tools: Ensure that the tools used for sampling are clean to avoid contamination. Disposable gloves and sterilized scissors or blades are often used.
  • Timing: The timing of sampling can vary on the stage of plant growth. It's important to sample consistently throughout the growing cycle to track changes.
